Lapidus Journal Summer 2017

I was taking a twilight walk through Victoria Park in Bath when I saw this wondrous sight: a red balloon filling like rising dough, impossibly, among the dark trees that pressed in on every side. So many people on the ground standing back, terrified and thrilled, as it threatened to take off, fire spouting as the whale breached.
Watching, I remembered the opening scene in Ian McEwan’s novel, Enduring Love, where a man falls to his death from a rising balloon and I remembered my mother (whom I'd just been to see in her hospital bed,) her papery hands making circles between this world and the next.
