Peter Emelone, Lapidus Board member, shares a personal reflection and writing exercise for Black History Month, which is celebrated during October in the UK.
October brings with it Black History Month in the UK, celebrated this year under the powerful theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” For me, this theme resonates not only with history, but with family, identity, and the stories we carry forward.
At Lapidus, we know how writing can help us find strength in our voices, honour resilience, and pass down wisdom. Each story, whether spoken or written, becomes part of the fabric that connects us—past, present, and future.
A personal reflection
This month, I am especially moved to celebrate a story close to my heart. My father, His Royal Highness Ichie Reuben Emelone, has been honoured with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Ichie Chikwado of Okija by the Okija Chieftaincy Royal Council in Anambra State. This recognition of his service and integrity is a reminder that true leadership is measured not by power alone, but by dedication to community.
His journey reminds me of what Black History Month calls us to remember: resilience, contribution, and pride. It is a legacy I hold with deep gratitude—and one that inspires me to keep writing, keep reflecting, and keep celebrating the voices that uplift us all.

An invitation to reflect
Take a few moments to write about a source of power and pride in your own life. It could be a family member, a mentor, a cultural tradition, or even a personal achievement. Ask yourself:
- What gives me strength when I need it most?
- Who or what inspires me to stand firm?
- How do I carry that pride into the future?
Let your words remind you of the resilience and legacy you hold within.
